My Address Book

I explored and merged new and legacy media into a conceptualised interactive experience. A project originated in the seminal work "The Medium is the Massage" (McLuhan, 1967), stimulated me to reflect on McLuhan's thesis that "All media are extensions of some human faculty – psychic or physical." (McLuhan, 1967) This reflection led me to identify media as an extension of the human brain, with a particular focus on human memory.

My chosen medium of legacy media, the address book, has become a container for my memories. I used a physical wooden archival box as the container for memory cards,  each of which embodies a location in my memory. They graphically depict the memories associated with each location. As a bridge, the NFC stickers facilitate a fluid connection between the physical and the virtual. With a simple tap with mobile phones, audience is navigated to the physical location and can access the digital memory gallery. The physical address book work as a portal for my multi-dimensional exploration of memory. By flying between those tangibles and the virtual memories, I have experience how mechanical memory can work as a tool to correct and augment our human memory.
